HOW SENIOR CITIZENS’ GAMBLING HABITS KEEP THEM YOUNG

Player Profiles – Senior Citizens Gambling Habits

In our previous Player Profiles article, we examined the casino gambling habits of college students. Now it’s time to examine gamblers on the other end of the age spectrum with a closer look at the casino gambling habits of senior citizens.

According to the American Journal of Geriatric Psychology, upwards of 70% of senior citizens gamble. It should come as no surprise then that a significant portion of casinos’ customer base is comprised of senior citizens (including Europa Casino of course) and that these casino players exhibit specific types of gambling habits. The “grannies on casino daytrip buses” stereotype notwithstanding, the fact is that active seniors have plenty of gamble in them. Moreover, usually no longer part of the workforce, senior citizens have the luxury of plenty of time to do as they please and often also have the discretionary funds to have some fun gambling once in a while.

Staying Active via Casino Gambling Might Help to Delay Aging

Recently, Dr. Alan Schoonmaker, who has written 5 poker psychology books, penned a series of articles in Card Player Magazine, entitled “Stay Young: Play Poker”. In them, he lists and expounds upon a number of reasons why those who are “getting up in years” should take to playing poker. In particular, he focuses on how the amount and types of thinking and strategizing common to playing poker help delay the aging process.
It  stands to reason that Schoonmaker’s points apply almost just as well to casino gambling for seniors. While slot game play might not involve too much thought, specifically table games and video poker games give the mind plenty of exercise, especially if you’re trying to use optimal strategy to win big.

It’s no surprise then that plenty of seniors with casino gambling habits gravitate towards the video poker machines and to table games like blackjack. They’re not only trying to turn some of their retirement savings into a windfall score, but clearly they’re also trying to give their minds some exercise and stay young!

H2: Seniors Tend to Have Conservative Casino Gambling Habits

Though the temptation to win big money playing casino games doesn’t abate no matter how old you get, senior citizens, as a rule, tend to be more risk averse than their younger gambling counterparts. Sure, they’ve generally got more of a disposable income that’s come from a lifetime of work, but seniors also understand the risks of blowing their hard-earned money all in one fell swoop. As mentioned above, seniors look at casino gambling as a fun, recreational activity. To play casino games for stakes that are too high would quite literally take away the fun for them as they’d start to worry if they’d lose too much. That said, seniors know they can still have plenty of fun gambling for low stakes, and that even if they end up losing, their bankrolls will last them a good long while as the casino games will provide them the entertainment they’re looking for.

Early to Bed and Early to Rise Makes (Seniors) Healthy, Wealthy, and Wise

Well over three centuries after his passing, Benjamin Franklin continues to be known as a brilliant thinker. With sayings like the ones that we still quote today in awesome adapted article subheadings, senior citizens seem to be the ones poised to capitalize on good old Mr. Franklin’s advice. Known to be extremely early risers, seniors sure know how to get a jump start on the day and that extends to their gambling habits as well.

At land-based casinos, the early morning and daytime hours often bear witness to plenty of gray-haired people milling around and having a good time at the slots, table games, and other casino entertainment stations. Often, casinos are aware of this and offer early-bird specials on dining and other amenities to help draw seniors to their establishments to do some gambling.

It’s only natural though that sometimes seniors will simply lack the energy to get out of the house. That doesn't necessarily mean they don’t have the urge to gamble it up a bit. In times like those, the tech-savvier seniors are likely to fire up their favorite online casino (hint hint, Europa Casino J) and pay a visit to scratch their gambling itch from the comfort of their (retirement?) home.

If you’re reading an article like this, chances are you can probably count yourself among those “with it” seniors who know their way around the Internet. Surely all that reading about gambling has tempted you a bit to try your luck at your favorite land-based or online casino destination. So go on and have some fun!
